The Secret - Radio Clips
Today we were looking through YouTube clips containing homophobic comments made by public figures in Northern Ireland in order to make a link between Will's story and homophobia. We looked at people such as Arlene Foster and Iris Robinson, who are renowned for their astounding comments.
We planned to initially use an audio clip of Iris Robinson but as there are no clips available online, we were going to use a clip from the Nolan Show where they are speaking on gay marriage. This will give Will's mother a chance to show her homophobic views and introduce the storyline. Below are some videos that inspired us and helped us make the final decision:
We wanted to use one of the most recent cases of homophobia in Northern Ireland. This is the Ashers Bakery incident, where a bakery refused to bake a cake for a gay couple, due to their religious beliefs. We decided to use this because it is recent and still a hot issue in NI, so it will put across our point more effectively and help us to combat the subject of homophobia with current affairs. However, we decided not to use this clip as it does not directly show homophobic evidence or comments in the dialogue and it would be difficult to derive homophobia if you weren't aware of the story.
We finally chose the first clip of Peter Tatchell because of the line saying that NI is the most homophobic place in Western Europe. This will help us get across the point of homophobia in NI clearly and concisely.

We found it difficult to find a clip that was perfect for our film. The clip that we need will have to include an opinion of a political party on homophobia/gay marriage and last less than a minute, whilst having the desired strong effect on the audience that we are aiming for. In order to overcome this difficulty, we have decided to write and record our own radio broadcast using our phones and GarageBand. This means that we can tailor make our own script so that we have the desired message in the desired time, and we are in full control of the clip. We will record this broadcast tomorrow whenever Maeve is available and we will edit it using GarageBand, where we can add on effects such as the 'Radio' effect so that our sound seems more diegetic and realistic.

Radio Presenter: That was cover of Everybody Talks by The Neon Trees here on RTE FM
Radio Presenter: So today we have Sinn Fein's Michelle O'Neill here to discuss her views on DUP's recent promise to block same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland.
Radio Presenter: So Michelle, what do you think about this reinforcement of DUP's views on equal marriage?
Michelle: Well, as you know, Sinn Fein have made a commitment to campaigning for marriage equality, and although everyone is entitled to an opinion, it's very disheartening that people still disagree with equal marriage. Equality threatens no one, and its time that all parties stand up for our citizens regardless of their sexual orientation. We, as a party, see no reason why anyone should be denied marriage regardless of their gender.
Radio Presenter: Do you think we'll be seeing a referendum for marriage equality in Northern Ireland anytime soon?
Michelle: We've made it quite known that we think a referendum for the North would be very interesting. I feel that the assembly is making itself increasingly irrelevant at this point, so the only way to deliver equal marriage may be to host a referendum, so it's definitely on the cards, definitely a valid option.
Radio Presenter: Do you believe that marriage equality is realistic in Northern Ireland?
Michelle: I definitely believe that marriage equality is possible and realistic, Just look at the Yes vote in last May's referendum on equal marriage in the Irish Republic. As it stands, the North of Ireland is the only part of the UK and Ireland where civil marriage is denied to same-sex couples. Sinn Fein are making equal marriage one of our top priorities, we are publishing our pledge to actively work and legislate marriage equality. We believe there is a growing demand for marriage equality, as there so should be, and as far as I'm concerned, the LGBT community have been discriminated against for far too long, and I believe they are entitled to be treated as equals, and treated with respect.
