The Secret - Music
When making a decision about what music we are going to use, we decided to use a cover of a song by an artist that is a gay icon in order to have a subtle tribute to the gay community. Some of the songs and artists that inspired us were:
David Bowie
We have found a cover of Tiny Dancer on YouTube that we are going to use for inspiration. This version is a slower and less dramatic version of an upbeat song - we feel that this will aid the transition of the boy being somewhat happy to the sadder scene that follows. This will also represent how he is in a happy point of his life because he has found the love of his life, however there is a dampener on this because of the homophobia he sees in everyday life.

For the music at the beginning, we have finally decided to use the upbeat song 'Everybody Talks' by the Neon Trees. We feel that this song is the strongest option to use because the lyrics are very relevant to the boys' secretive relationship ("it started with a whisper", "momma's always got a backtrack" and "I've found out that everybody talks too much"). As well as this, we can also use our original idea of having a song by a gay artist as the lead singer of Neon Trees is an openly gay member of the LGBT+ community.
I am going to cover this song using GarageBand and using inspiration from this cover:
We are going to play this song in the first 30 seconds over the credits and titles until the radio begins playing. At this point, we are going to have the radio presenter talk about the song in order to make the sound appear to have been diagetic.
David Bowie
- Heroes
- Let's Dance
- Life on Mars
Elton John
- Tiny Dancer
- Rocketman
- Don't Go Breaking My Heart
- Philadelphia Freedom
- I'm Still Standing
Queen
- I Want To Break Free
- Somebody to Love
- Don't Stop Me Now
- Another One Bites The Dust
Prince
- Raspberry Beret
We wanted the music to be upbeat, particularly during the intro in order to show that the protagonist is still very young and is perhaps just returning from school or a day with friends - we want him to appear upbeat and happy despite his circumstances, whilst still paying tribute to gay icons.
In order to overcome copyright issues, we are going to have to cover a song ourselves using GarageBand or else find an uncopyrighted cover on YouTube.
